Thursday 12.20.12

Hello my darlings. Sorry I am not with you again today. I have a severe sinus infection. I am planning on being back on Friday for sure. Until then you have work to do.

1.) Make sure your articles are printed and ready to turn in to me tomorrow morning.

2.) I will also be collecting your groups completed scripts and storyboards for approval.

3.) Finish up your food journal.

4.) Make sure your interviews are done, and please do not ask the sub to be out and about in the building - take care of it during study halls or after school.

5.) Any missing work that you want to turn in, make sure it's in the late tray. Also, if there was a discrepancy on your grade sheet attach the work to the grade sheet I handed out Tuesday, highlight the item, and submit it to the tray as well. Just like we did last nine weeks.

Please, please, please use your time wisely - don't waste these days goofing around when you should be getting much needed work done. I can't stress that enough. If you have questions that can't wait then email me at mcguyrt@cantonlocal.org - and I will get to them as soon as I can. Just do the best you can without me there. And BEHAVE....Santa is watching! ;)

“When people cheat in any arena, they diminish themselves-they threaten their own self-esteem and their relationships with others by undermining the trust they have in their ability to succeed and in their ability to be true.”
― Cheryl Hughes

To Cheat? Or Not To Cheat? That is the Question!

“’Cheating is on the rise,’ reports expert Donald McCabe, a professor at Rutgers
University.  His surveys show that school dishonesty is a growing problem in
every part of the country.”  His and other studies report that 73 % to 80% of
high school students cheat.  “What is the big deal about cheating?  It’s only
wrong if you get caught.”  Do you agree or disagree with this statement.  What
should we do about cheating in the schools?

Laughter

It is said that laughter is the best medicine - and I absolutely agree. I think my favorite term when it comes to laughter is "chortle" - meaning to chuckle and snort - and those of you that know me, know that I tend to chortle a great deal. :)

But how about those deep belly laughs? Those girlish giggles? I was sitting at Rockne's last night eating dinner with my mother and both of us couldn't stop laughing because of the baby giggling in the booth next to us. Does other people's laughter make you laugh? Silly jokes and comedians aside, what truly makes you laugh - one of those deep belly laughs?

Here is a four second video clip of my niece Jenna - who is two. And yes she is imitating Arnold Schwarzenegger, with the infamous "I'll be back..."

This little girl makes me laugh - over and over and over again, at the same silly imitation. Other things that make me laugh? Mr. Clark - we all know he is hilarious. You guys (my students) pretty much make me laugh at something every single day. So is laughter the best medicine? Does it make your school day better and more enjoyable? Now it's your turn to tell me - what makes you laugh and why - and how laughter affects you every day. Have fun!

Bottle it Up...

There are different ideas that come to my mind when I think about memories and which one I'd bottle up for all time, to relive over and over. My first ingredient would be summer, not the blasting heat of July, but the cool dusk of June. The next ingredient would be the setting sun. Then, the jamming sounds of Dave Matthews Band playing at Blossom Music Theater, that night I think they played forever and ever. I was with my best friend, we were 17, and we sang along with every word and note that night. I can remember the feeling of fulfillment, happiness, and it seemed like everything in the world was just perfect.

I get goosebumps at the thought of opening this bottle - one that has been lodged in my memory for so long, lost in the plight of everyday. I imagine uncorking the top, breathing deeply, eyes closed, and the sounds of the band take over, my body relaxes with the heat of the sun, I can feel the grass under my feet. The air is charged with emotion, the crowd is lifting up their voices to the sky and I am overwhelmed by humble happiness.

Amateurs

I do not consider myself a professional in any sense of the word. Being in professional development sessions reminds me of how much I still have to learn - and how much more I need to grow as an educator. I think the most important part to remember, as a teacher, is that you will never be an expert, you will never be a professional - in the sense of the word. I say this because so much of what we do on a daily basis is constantly changing. We have to have the state of mind to keep growing and changing, with the evolution of education in the 21st century. I suppose in that sense I'm perfectly happy hanging out as an amateur with a bunch of amateurs.
